23 May – Everyone home for dinner.
What we call Venezuelan chicken, because my husband had a similar dish in Venezuela (pan sautéed chicken–no extra oil–cover with a can of enchilada sauce and simmer until the chicken is done), sweet potatoes (or you can have plantians), black beans. I forgot to make rice. We usually have rice, as well. Instead, we had bread.
22 May –  youngest son made steak, salad, bread.

19 May – our middle son's 18th birthday. my work friend, Sue, saved the day with this recipe–http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/lemon-pasta-with-roasted-shrimp-recipe2/index.html
so good. so easy. so filling. I made it for three teenage boys/men + my husband and me and we did not finish the full recipe. I even used frozen shrimp.

update–so, while cleaning up the dishes, I realized I never added the lemon juice, just the zest! whoops.

update 2 (May 20) – wow, what a tired cook I was – in reviewing the recipes with friends this morning, I realized I never added the butter, either.

9 May – Happy Mother's Day – quiet day at our house, which is what I wanted. Made what I wanted to eat. My youngest son helped make the strawberry shortcake, which were terrible. Betty Crocker's recipe did not work out–flat, dry, not flaky. Don't know what I did wrong. Nothing whipped cream could not fix!

arugula salad with blue cheese dressing,
asparagus, hash brown.
Strawberry shortcake.

Lovely lilacs from my son.

7 May – my 17-year-old asked "what is this?"

hot dish (and garlic bread)

I grew up on this hot dish, but my kids haven't grown up with hot dish at all. Don't know what possessed me to make it. Maybe the fact we had snow predicted for the 7th of May and it was so cold that I turned the heat back on. This was a modern version, however. I used ground turkey instead of ground beef.
6 May – frozen pizza
